
This course is made up of 6 sections. The sections make up a wholistic way of parenting where all factors which may be contributing to your child’s challenging behaviour is taken into account.
Each section is made up of different topics and each topic can be experienced and learned separately.
This section deals with you the parent. We will look at what qualities you bring to the parenting relationship. What can you change that will impact the challenging behaviour in a positive way?
Topic 1. We will look at your history and your temperament.
Topic 2. We will examine your outlook on life and your reasons for having this child in the first place.
Topic 3. You will learn the importance of building your own self esteem in order to be an effective parent.
Topic 4. You will be given many ideas and techniques on how to practically build your self esteem as a parent.
Section 2 will assist you to work more collaboratively with your partner.
Topic 1. This topic normalises the fact that you and your partner are different and goes so far as to encourage you to embrace the differences and allow your child to benefit from different styles.
Topic 2. You will be taught several easy ways to work together to benefit your child even if you disagree with one another.
Topic 1. You will be enlightened about the importance of being assertive and taught how to become assertive.
Topic 2. It will be highlighted how vital it is to teach your child that you have feelings, needs and cannot be totally available.
Topic 3. The importance of running a non-chaotic home is stressed and you will be shown how to achieve this .
Topic 4. This topic covers subjects often not spoken about like taking responsibility for setting the right tone at home and the importance of you being an appropriate role model.
Moving now to working on your child directly, this topic is all about building the self esteem of your child. Self esteem is not only about success but about better behaviour.

Topic 4. Focusing on character rather than results.
We will now be focusing on fun, easy ways to gain your child’s co-operation without anger or tears.
Topic 1. Communicate effectively and focus.
Topic 2. Use devices like music, stories, objects, rulers.
Topic 3. Utilise games and humour enticements, associations, inclusion, distraction.
Topic 4. The power of positive reinforcement.
Parents always want to find effective punishment techniques. As a last resort you should punish but know there are many types of punishment besides taking watching TV away.
Topic 1. Before you punish, consider the guilt of the child, your mood, and the child’s mood.
Topic 2. If you are punishing frequently and it is getting nowhere, check these things out to break the pattern and to be more effective.
Topic 3. Types of punishment include withholding praise, making a comment, correcting behaviour, corporal punishment
